Gardener's Cottage
$175–$300 / Night with Two-Night Minimum
The Gardener’s Cottage is one of our premiere Mendocino vacation rentals, and sits nestled between our beautiful gardens and expansive bluffs. Sweeping ocean views of the Pacific greet you at every window from this lodging. Nearly 30 miles of coastline are visible from the kitchen, living room, two bedrooms bedroom, and deck. So stunning is the view, in fact, that National Geographic chose this stretch of the Mendocino Coast to represent the beauty of the entire Northern California Coast in an article on Northern California.
The interior of the Mendocino lodging is comfortable and friendly, with two bedrooms, a living room, and a kitchen and dining area. There are wood stoves in both the living room and the master bedroom, which can be kindled for cozy fires in the evening. To take the edge off of the morning chill, the Mendocino lodging also features a furnace. A piano is provided for those who want to make their own music, and a CD player is available for simply enjoying the music of others. Television, DVD and VCR players offer a break from the great outdoors, should you find it necessary, and free wireless internet gives you the opportunity to stay in touch via the internet. The full kitchen includes a full-sized stove, refrigerator, microwave, bread maker, and espresso machine – perfect for fixing a little something in the morning to enjoy outside on the deck.
The master bedroom features a large skylight over the feather bed, separate lights operable from each side of the bed, and a wood burning stove to keep you warm at night. A large sliding glass door looks over the Pacific ocean and opens onto a private deck, letting the sounds of seals, deer and surf serenade you all night long. For those who love horses, you’ll be happy to know our property horses are thrilled to come up to an open window and take treats, should you feel so inclined.
Should you feel like leaving the comfort of your Mendocino lodging, you will find an enormous world of possibility just outside your door. The bluffs offer gorgeous views of the Mendocino coastline, the Pacific ocean, and the many small beaches. There are more than a mile of rough trails along the bluffs, leading you to wonder after wonder. You may be graced by the sight of our resident seals, basking on the rocks at a low-tide rookery. You may take in the joys of the many wildflowers that spring up all along the bluff. You may even see whales passing by on their way south to breed, or north to return home.
Down the bluffs there is a beach, framed by sheer 200-foot cliffs which gather and amplify the sounds of the sea. Reaching the beach is not for the faint of heart, and the last fifty-feet are reached with by rope, but it is an experience well worth it for those who feel up to the challenge. It is a memorable event to be present on an evening when the setting sun's golden light penetrates through the layers of thin fog, swirling around the sea stack spires and exposing the great beauty of the Mendocino Coast.
About 200 yards down the bluff from your deck you will find a large viewing platform, ideal for watching the ocean or the sunset. This sturdy wooden platform offers a perfect place to set out a picnic, enjoy some wine, or simply lay back and gaze at the stars.
The complete lack of light pollution at the Gardener's Cottage exposes an unimagined Milky Way. Einstein's description of the heavens as awesome concurs with our reverence and explains the skylight above your feather bed. Personally we slept outside on the platform for the first six months we were here and return regularly.
During years when we receive ample rain, there’s a seasonal waterfall as well. Once you've seen it, you'll understand why we recommend you hike through the fern-filled grotto, following the river until it brings you to the breathtaking fusion of falling river and crashing surf! The view from the top of the waterfall takes in 200-foot sheer cliffs to the south and north. The sea stacks of the Pacific break up the swells into a cacophonous chorus, while behind you you'll hear the melodic song of a river gathering its strength through a series of waterfalls and pools before finally tumbling beneath your legs to rejoin the Pacific Ocean.
For the adventurous, there’s a cook-out ring on a hidden plateau outside, where your only company will be bobcats, ring-tailed ferrets and white-tail deer. If you’re so moved, and the bedroom skylight seems a bit restrictive, consider the firmament unfettered by sheetrock framing! We only ask that you leave the 60-acre bedroom as clean as you found it!
Regardless of where you decide to cook dinner, for your culinary enjoyment there are well-established year-round herb gardens, seasonal vegetable gardens and – if your timing is correct – raspberries and strawberries.
With miles of trails and natural beauty for pets and children to run freely in, with a cozy atmosphere and down-home feel, with sweeping ocean views of the Pacific, and a private beach for the bold, the Elk Guest House is the ideal destination for people looking for the real Mendocino Coast experience.
Our Mendocino lodgings are not the perfect fit for everyone. If you’re in search of a high-end hotel with every conceivably amenity, and a polished, refined air, you may wish to look elsewhere. If, however, your ideal of perfection is unspoiled beauty, a cozy, family feel, friendly proprietors who live on the property and are always available with a helping hand of a bit of advice, and a place where your children and pets are not simply tolerated, but are appreciated and enjoyed, then our Mendocino vacation rentals are for you.
Saddle and Tack
$175–$195 / Night with Two-Night Minimum
The Saddle and Tack House is a two-story lodging in which the entire top floor is the master bedroom. This master bedroom commands a unique view out the sliding glass door situated at the foot of your feather bed, a view that looks over the top of the main house and includes one of the very few white sand beaches on Mendocino’s traditionally rocky coast. A large wood stove off to the side of your bed is capable of keeping a fire going all night long, keeping you warm and cozy, and a furnace can heat the entire house, should you not wish to kindle a fire. Like our other Mendocino vacation rentals, the Saddle and Tack lodging is situated on our same beautiful property.
East and west decks allow you to enjoy a cup of coffee while bathed in the first rays of dawn and then switch decks to barbeque the glimmering light of dusk. The Saddle and Tack House includes a complete kitchen with a full-sized stove, refrigerator, microwave, bread maker and espresso machine. A piano is provided for those who want to make their own music, and a CD player is available for simply enjoying the music of others. Television, DVD and VCR players offer a break from the great outdoors, should you find it necessary, and free wireless internet gives you the opportunity to stay in touch via the internet.
